Talent development does not take place in a social vacuum.<\/p>\n

For a successful outcome from participation in a program such Beachside\u2019s, a young athlete\u2019s basic psychological needs must be met. Parents and coaches must work in tandem to create an environment that supports those needs; they play distinct yet but complementary roles. The efforts of the coach, the player and the parents need to be in stress-free balance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
Three Critical Needs\u00a0for the Young\u00a0Athlete’s Learning\u00a0Experience<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Autonomy<\/span><\/td>\nThe athlete perceives the experience as valuable, and participates as his\/her own choice.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Competence<\/span><\/td>\nThe athlete is effective at functioning and learning in the program environment.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Relateness<\/span><\/td>\nThe athlete feels\u00a0cared about\u00a0by others: coaches, team-mates, parents.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

If Parents and Coaches work to gather to\u00a0meet these needs, the results will be\u00a0Psychological well-being, Strong performance, Motivation, Vitality and Mental toughness<\/span><\/p>\n

Failure to do so can lead to\u00a0Exhaustion, Negative Affect and Burnout.<\/p>\n

A coach may become an very import person in the athlete\u2019s life, but his\/her bond with the athlete is distinct from\u00a0that of a close friend or family member.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n
The Coach\u2019s role\u00a0is to<\/span><\/td>\nThe Parent\u2019s role is to<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
\n

Be empathetic: have and communicate\u00a0authentic<\/i>\u00a0interest in the athlete.<\/p>\n

Be non-judgmental, non-blaming<\/p>\n

Acknowledge an athlete\u2019s perspective, feelings and values<\/p>\n

Challenge the athlete to work hard and improve – in both the technical and mental aspects of the sport.<\/p>\n

Be the primary provider of sport-specific support through well designed training activities, as well as individual technical and tactical and advice.<\/td>\n

Provide emotional support as the athlete experiences success and setbacks.<\/p>\n
– Experiencing and overcoming adversity are critical elements of youth sport. Parents can provide emotional support in ways that a coach cannot.<\/div>\n

 <\/p>\n

Help the athlete find a productive balance between sports, family life, academics and other social activity.<\/p>\n

Provide logistical and financial support<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

The young athlete must see his\/her coach as the primary source of sport-specific knowledge and advice. While it is incumbent on the coach to earn<\/i> this status in the athletes\u2019s eyes, it is also essential that parents do nothing to negate<\/em> it.<\/p>\n

It is very, very tempting for parents attempt to supplement the coach\u2019s efforts with their own instruction. But unless the parent has manifest professional expertise in teaching the sport, doing so is always<\/i> counterproductive, and is usually resented by the athlete even if that frustration is not expressed.<\/p>\n

Indeed\u00a0such\u00a0role encroachment can undermine a child\u2019s confidence in the coach and introduce significant psychological stress – resulting in confused decision-making on the field, poor affect, and with two masters to please, a significant dilution of enjoyment.<\/p>\n

Parents can<\/i> y should<\/i> encourage the athlete to make use of the coach\u2019s knowledge. Younger players reach a milestone when they can autonomously manage their relationship with the coach, and meet with him\/her on their own to seek individual guidance.<\/span> Parents can help by emotionally preparing and encouraging their child to take that step.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
